This blog is intended to serve four purposes:
- To encourage the attempts of students in the class in completing B.A.'s in English;
- To assist and promote the future academic work of students in the class, regardless of the discipline;
- To explain and support entry into graduate school for any students in the class; and
- To continue to build on the class's diverse, enthusiastic, and insightful community into the future.
End-of-Semester Gathering
Some of us have suggested a picnic in Grant Park which will include torillas, open pit fires, impromptu sermons, and untamed wolves. I am suggesting May 28 or 29. If you want to come, please post a comment including your availability and a creative dish or game you can provide. Feel free to suggest other dates, locations, and/or themes. Given the competency we have all developed over the semester (a la CompClass) with discussion forums, we should be able to build this outing pretty well using the blog. Be sure to read the comments of others before posting your own so that you can extend or amend the discussion.
Finally . . .
This class has been an exciting and enriching experience for me to teach. Thank you, each one of you, for every day that you came to class prepared, critical, and ready to contribute something spoken or written to how we can view American Literature.
Hoooray first post! haha. Anyway I'd be down for some sort of post-semester gather.. (assuming I get a good final grade :p) I'm not sure exactly where we'd be doing this but I'll bring a guitar so Michael and I can jam.
ReplyDeletecheers.
I can bring a guitar too, I think. That would be fun, though, I have to admit, I much prefer singing. Especially if anyone can bring chords for songs by the Avett Brothers, M. Ward, or the Rural Alberta Advantage!
ReplyDeleteAlso, maybe we should open the event up to pals, significant others, parole officers, etc?
This sounds incredible and I love the blog. I think it will be awesome to stay in touch with everyone beyond the semester because you're right Pete, we've all grown to respect eachother and build our own community in some sense or another. I can't make it the 28th and most likely the 29th due to Graduation (WOO!) but if that's what works out for everyone, I'll count on it happening again another time.
ReplyDeleteI'm out of town the May 29 - June 6
ReplyDeleteI work May 12, 13, 15, 16, 19, 20, 22, 23, 24, 26 and the 28.
hahahah, i know that's lots but, I work all day unfortunately.
I'll bring cookies!
If we did the 28 I work at 3 so I could come earlier
Wow, it looks like Hillary's schedule is shot. We should all definitely bring guitars though, and any other instruments we can procure. Mica said he plays violin, Katie can play the auto-harp, I'm sure Tori has something crazy up her sleeve. It's going to be difficult planning a time that doesn't inconvenience anyone's schedules. Somebody decisive, not me, should set a date in the near future so everyone can plan their schedules accordingly. I can bring tortillas and beans, and of course the wolf.
ReplyDeleteWow, I just went through the most frustrating process of posting my previous comment. Just shows my incompetency towards technology.
ReplyDeleteOK . . . taking Michael's suggestion and being decisive. It looks like Hillary has Tuesday, May 18 available. That day looks semi-open to me in the afternoon. My first new suggestion is that we do it that day, but late. Like 3 or 4pm.
ReplyDeleteKatie, do you still have classes during the day at your "other" school? If so, my second new suggestion is that we choose a day after Hillary gets back but before summer semester starts. Something like Tuesday, June 7 or Sunday, June 13.
So now, please weigh in on May 18 (late in the afternoon), June 7 (any time), or June 13 (any time). AND if you can bring an instrument, name it.
Finally, if you add yourself as a "follower" of the blog you will get automatic updates to your email.
Oh, I am DONE with high school until grad day so the 18th is looking swell for me.
ReplyDeleteAnd Michael, that process was ridiculous. It took me like 10 minutes just to post that junk... only to realize there was like 100 grammatical errors.
May 18th sounds awesome, but if that conflicts with too many people's schedules I can also do June 7th. I don't work Monday through Wednesdays so those are perfect dates.
ReplyDeleteI'm game for May 18th. I can bring chips and salsa. Or maybe even some sort of South Western dish.
